Fitness Myths: Are You Working out TOO Hard?

Are you working out TOO hard, TOO often? Is that even possible?!

Let's break down some fitness myths today!

In my 12+ years of experience as a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, I've heard it all. The Keto diet, low fat, low carb, 75 Hard, intermittent fasting, cardio vs. strength training, low weight/high reps, high weight/low reps, and the list goes on!

The truth of the matter is - it doesn't have to be extreme. In fact, it shouldn't be extreme if you want to establish a lifelong, sustainable healthy lifestyle.

So, back to the question of the day. Is it possible that you're working out too hard and too often? The answer is...YES! It is absolutely possible that you are overdoing it with your fitness routine, which could be sabotaging your body.

Overtraining is extremely hard on your body and can damage both your physical and mental health. Overtraining can lead to injuries, impaired metabolism, poor immunity, hormonal dysfunction, trouble sleeping, and even lead to mental health struggles such as depression and body image disorders.

I recommend starting slow and steady! Aim for 3 days a week of 30 minutes of movement. If you're already doing that, add in one more workout. If 3 isn't doable for you right now, aim for 2. Start where you are capable and don't stress if every week doesn't go according to plan.

Now here's a myth busting fact that not every personal trainer will tell you...

Rest is just as important as exercise!

Taking regular breaks and rest days allows your muscles to recover and repair. It's absolutely critical for your mind and body, no matter your fitness level. You should be taking rest days throughout the week, and even more if you're feeling under the weather, sleep deprived, or overly sore from a previous workout.

Now, rest days don't have to be a free-for-all Netflix and snacks binge (although I support those from time to time)! Rest days can look like a relaxed walk, gentle stretching, or meditation. I still encourage you to find ways to work in some self-care even though you won't be getting your heart rate up!

If you're looking for a way to establish a workout routine from the comfort of your own home, with the guidance of a personal trainer, I offer a group program through my app! You can access my guided workout videos 24/7 from your phone or laptop. I also offer guided stretching, yoga sessions, meditation, and self-lymphatic massages for those very important rest days! If you want professional workouts you can do at your own pace, email me! I'd love to get you in my group.
