Why Sleep Is Important

I think we’ve all had those mornings where we wake up and feel as though we haven’t slept at all. Yes, we were in bed for hours but, tossed and turned, had unsettling dreams or just couldn’t turn our mind off. The next day feels like you are living in a fog and everything seems harder than normal. A night like this every once in a while is normal, a night like this on a weekly basis says that you could use some guidance in the sleep department!

Venti has mastered sleeping!

It’s funny because my family knows at 9:00pm I start the ritual of settling my mind and getting ready for bed, they also know how cranky I get if this routine gets disturbed. Yes, I can get cranky! 🙂  I even get teased about it occasionally! But, I don’t care! Sleep, just like exercise and nutrition are so important to me. My normal routine is in bed and asleep by 10 and up around 5:30-6:00am. I set an alarm for 6:00am but typically, I wake up before it goes off. This routine and discipline have not always been easy but once I found what worked for me, and knew the pure bliss of a good nights sleep there was no going back!

So, let’s talk about the benefits of a good nights sleep!  Hang on to your shorts because its a long list and I’m only listing the ones I think are going to be most important for my audience.

Good sleep-

  • Repairs our bodies
  • Keeps our immune system in check
  • Helps with brain function (concentration, performance, productivity and cognition)
  • Helps regulate blood sugar
  • Helps prevent excess weight gain (trouble losing weight, sleep may be the culprit)
  • Decreases the duration of illness
  • Has been shown to have a major impact on heart disease
  • Reduces stress
  • Helps with memory retention
  • Balances our mood (helps with anxiety and depression)

Wow! Like I said, these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how deeply sleep effects us.

Being mindful of your amount and quality of sleep is absolutely a non negotiable in my book! Over the next few weeks I’m going to help you create your perfect bedtime routine. I’m so excited to dive into this with you!

Sleep well my friends!
